How to Prepare for a Virtual Interview: Tips and Tricks

When interviewing for a job, you may be asked to appear in a virtual interview. After all, they can save both the employer and the candidate time and money. But before you go ahead and schedule one, it’s important to make sure you’re prepared. Here are some tips to help you ace your virtual interview!

1. Don’t underestimate the technical side of things.

Before your interview, test your computer and your internet connection to make sure everything is working properly. Have a backup plan in case of technical difficulties. It’s also important to make sure you’re using a quiet, private space where you won’t be interrupted during the interview.

2. Dress the part.

While you don’t have to put on a full suit, it’s important to dress professionally for your virtual interview. This sends the message that you’re taking the interview seriously and that you’re a professional.

3. Do your research.

Before the interview, research the company and the position you’re applying for. This will help you prepare for questions about why you’re interested in the job and how your skills fit the role.

4. Be aware of your body language.

In a virtual interview, your body language is even more important than it is in an in-person interview. Make sure you’re sitting up straight and making eye contact with the camera. Avoid fidgeting or playing with your hair.

5. Practice, practice, practice.

Before the interview, it’s a good idea to practice your answers to common interview questions. This will help you feel more confident and reduce the chances of stumbling over your words during the actual interview.

6. Take your time.

If you need a moment to think about a question, that’s perfectly acceptable. It’s better to take a few extra seconds to collect your thoughts than to blurt out something you might later regret.

7. Be aware of your tone.

In a virtual interview, it can be easy to come across as angry, bored, or disinterested. Pay attention to your tone of voice and make sure you sound interested and engaged in the conversation.

8. Ask questions.

At the end of the interview, be sure to ask any questions you have about the job or the company. This shows that you’re truly interested in the position and that you’re thinking about your future with the company.

9. Follow up.

After the interview, be sure to send a thank-you note to the interviewer. This is a nice gesture and it shows that you’re still interested in the job.

10. Relax.

The most important thing to remember is to relax and be yourself. The interviewer wants to get to know you, so just be yourself and let your personality shine through.  If you do that, you’re sure to ace the interview!
